About Prof. Dr. Günter Hafız
Thirty-five years of medicine, one specialty, and a simple conviction: patients deserve to understand their own treatment.
Prof. Dr. Günter Hafız is an ear, nose and throat surgeon whose working life has been given to the head and neck: its cancers, its glands, its airway and its voice. He graduated from Istanbul University's Faculty of Medicine in 1989 and completed his specialist training in otorhinolaryngology at the same institution in 1994.
A research fellowship at the Head and Neck Institute of the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1993 shaped the surgical focus he has kept ever since. He became an associate professor in 1999 and a professor of otorhinolaryngology in 2006, teaching and operating at Istanbul University for most of his career before opening his own practice in Beşiktaş.
His clinical work covers complex head and neck cancer surgery, thyroid and parathyroid surgery, transoral laser surgery, airway surgery, microvascular reconstruction and recurrent laryngeal nerve monitoring. He has written for international and national journals, contributed chapters to Turkish otolaryngology textbooks, and presented at conferences throughout his career.
Prof. Dr. Hafız believes empathy is essential to good medical care. He explains each diagnosis and treatment plan until patients and their families feel informed and supported — and he does so in Turkish or English.
